North Andover Youth & Recreation Services has been offering adventure based programs in North Andover for over 10 years and is committed to staying at the top of this field. We assure safety and quality in our program in the following areas: | |
STAFF TRAINING: All staff is trained in facilitation of all adventure activities, including top rope and lead rock climbing, challenge course management, trip leading, etc.
EQUIPMENT: Our equipment, challenge course, and rock wall all receive yearly inspections by Northeast Adventure. We are dedicated to using the safest equipment.
RISK-MANAGEMENT: The Adventure Program staff has appropriate medical training for the activity at hand, whether it is in the backcountry, in the city or anywhere in between. | ROPES/CHALLENGE COURSE: We operates both a high and low challenge course, located in the North Andover Town Forest. Elements of this course were constructed and receive yearly inspections by Northeast Adventure. Interested group should contact us and we will cater a day, or longer, on our course to meet your needs. We have offered programs to school groups, corporate groups, sports teams, private groups and many others. Benefits that groups receive from a challenge course vary widely but often include improved communication, greater efficiency, and increased self-esteem. This is accomplished through positive risk taking within a group or individually. All staff is trained in challenge course facilitation and we aim to keep the participation to a staff ration of 8:1. CLIMBING WALL: The indoor climbing wall is open to members on Fridays 2:30 - 4:30 and on Saturdays 1:00 - 4:00 for our 4th and 5th graders
ADVENTURE TRIPS: We run day and overnight trips. These include skateboard trips, camping, summer programming, skiing and snowboarding, mountain biking, paintball, indoor and outdoor rock climbing.
Ryan put together a video for the Week of Dirt program that ran in July, 2008 Check it out by clicking on the video window below!
ROCK CLIMBING: We offers rock climbing programs year round and incorporates rock climbing into several of our adventure and adventure based counseling programs. We utilize the area around us, such as Pawtuckaway State Park in New Hampshire, Red Rocks in Gloucester, as well as our own indoor rock climbing wall. By taking participants into an unknown environment and presenting them with a challenging task, rock climbing has been linked to increased trust within an individual and a group and a feeling of self-efficacy.
While tremendous benefits rise from high perceived risk of rock climbing, we minimize the actual risk in a number of ways:
All rock climbing programs are run under the direction of a coordinator trained in top rope as well as lead rock climbing facilitation. This coordinator also has certifications in High Angle Rescue, EMT-B, and Wilderness Emergency Medical Care.
