Essex Juvenile Court Lawrence Session JUVENILE DIVERSION: Juvenile Diversion is a non-criminal disposition finding alternative means for youth rather than going through regular court process. Alternatives to court might include counseling, community service, and/or restitution. Eligible juveniles are between the ages of 7 and 17. Diversion is only for first time offenders, and is made on the recommendation of the arresting officer. COMMUNITY SERVICE: Through the Juvenile Diversion program provided by the courts, juveniles are given an alternative to regular court proceedings, which usually includes community service hours. Community Service comes in many forms, whether it is raking an elderly persons yard or washing police vehicles. Community Service gives the youth an opportunity to give back to their community. SCARED STRAIGHT: This program is run at the Essex County Correctional Facility and is designed to serve as a creative and real educational experience for youth and students about prison life. Visiting groups are given a tour of the prison by a sheriff and are then joined by three to five inmates who talk about prison and how they ended up there. The purpose of this program is to educate youth, deter them from a life of crime, and encourage them to make positive choices. THIS PROGRAM IS UNAVAILABLE AT THE MOMENT.
